The Catania Aeroporto-Fontanarossa stop is inaugurated

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana makes a 6.5-million-euro investment

Inaugurated today was the commercial service stop of Catania Aeroporto-Fontanarossa, realised by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Italiane Group) and completed in compliance with timeframe established by the Sicilian Region – despite the health emergency.

In attendance at the ceremony were Giancarlo Cancelleri – Undersecretary of the State Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, Marco Falcone – Regional Councillor of Infrastructure and Mobility for the Sicilian Region, Salvo Pogliese – Mayor of Catania, Francesca Moraci – Director of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, and Nico Torrisi – CEO of the Società Aeroporto Catania.

The Catania Aeroporto-Fontanarossa stop is part of the ongoing operations to upgrade the railway axis of Messina-Catania-Palermo and the “Nodo Catania” railway link.

With two tracks – one in the direction of Bicocca and one towards Catania Centrale-Messina – the station has platforms extending 200 metres in length and pathways at a height of 55 centimetres, to ensure easier passenger access to the trains. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana is making a 6.5-million-euro investment.

The stop is strategic for the railway lines of Palermo-Catania, Messina-Catania-Syracuse, Catania-Caltagirone and Catania-Caltanissetta, representing an additional opportunity for people who using the international “Vincenzo Bellini” airport, which sees about 10 million annual transits, rendering it one of the most important Italian airports.

Trains will connect the airport to the rest of Sicily from 4:50 am to 10:42 pm (with the first inbound train at 4:50 am and the last departure at 10:42 pm).
