We have always been committed to improving our environmental performance. The goal is to help reduce the environmental footprint of industrial, manufacturing and service activities by identifying the best and most innovative solutions to make business processes more efficient and effective.
Recognizing the five strategic pillars of the 2017-2026 Industrial Plan, the Group intends to promote the creation of a new mobility system that fosters integration between the different ways of transport (collective, shared and individual) with a view to social, economic and environmental sustainability.
The flagship of Trenitalia is Frecciarossa 1000, the first high speed train in the world which obtained the Environmental Impact Certification (EPD) since it can hold 28 grams of CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer. The project was designed to minimize energy consumption up to 30% less than the previous model, the ETR 500.
Thanks to the fleet renewal, that involves local transport, too, reductions in fuel consumption per transport unit have been significantly reduced: about 6% less kJ/pkm (kilo Joule per passenger km) and kJ/tkm (kilo Joule per tonne km) between 2009 and 2015.
Moving on the rails is the greenest solution: it produces about 76% less CO2 instead travelling by plane and about 60% less than by car.
The Group's commitment doesn't focus on rails predominantly. There are many green mobility services achieved in partnership with Trenitalia: car and scooter sharing with Enjoy in Milan, Rome, Florence, Turin and Catania, bike sharing with Clear Channel and Bicincittà in dozens of italian cities. In the stations of Rome, Milan and Bologna it is possible to rent electric cars thanks to the Maggiore EcoRent service. The Group also supports the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), launched on 25 September 2015 by the United Nations, in order to promote a common development agenda from here until 2030.
The Environmental Policy aims to guide all sectors and activities in which FS Italiane Group operates, namely the design, creation and maintenance of works and equipment, infrastructure management, circulation of passenger trains and goods, management of railway stations, parking lots, rail property and the relative support services.

For a number of years now, we have started special initiatives aimed at spreading amongst employees and suppliers a purchasing policy which is backed by Green Procurement principles.
The management of environmental aspects and the introduction of sustainable environmental criteria in purchasing procedures are at the basis of a path in which all group companies are involved.
Also, starting from 2013, the companies have been asked to include a clause on following the group's environmental policy in new contracts.
