Stazioni del Territorio

The 'Stazioni del Territorio' project, promoted by the FS Italiane Group, is aimed at municipalities with less than 15,000 inhabitants, with the objective of transforming railway stations into multifunctional service hubs. In travellers' buildings and/or disused outdoor areas, multi-purpose services and public utilities are made available to citizens, to contribute to the cultural and economic regeneration of the territories.

The Popoli Vittorito, Urbisaglia-Sforzacosta and Matelica stations were completely renovated in 2024, while those of Antrodoco Centro and Baiano di Spoleto were completed in 2025. In-depth demographic, socio-economic and user volume analyses were conducted for each station. The needs of individual communities were taken into account, when new services and functions were introduced, also thanks to the Memoranda of Understanding signed by the Group with Amazon, the National Carabinieri Association, the Italian Red Cross, the Federation of General Practitioners, Federfarma and Sport e Salute.

Starting in 2025, the project will be extended nationwide, with the first stations involved being Loreto, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Albizzate-Solbiate Arno. Railway stations beyond mobility hubs, to include services, culture and social cohesion. The aim is to renew the central role of stations by transforming them from mere railway hubs to multifunctional hubs for local communities.

Railway stations have gone from being mere transit points to becoming the heart of the local social fabric, especially in less densely populated areas. Today, they are true hubs of urban attraction and offer a range of multifunctional services that foster social cohesion and local economic development. Purpose of the station enhancement project is to make territories more attractive, creating widespread hubs that integrate the station with neighbouring real estate assets, becoming central elements for urban and social revitalisation, supporting the vitality of the territory.

Targets:

• Enhance the centrality of stations within the local social fabric, by exploiting their widespread presence throughout the country, especially in less densely populated areas.
• Open up the station to the surrounding city and territory, turning it into a true hub, an urban attraction, no longer just a point for collective mobility, but rather a centre of multi-purpose services and functions dedicated to all.
• Help to curb the depopulation of small villages.

The hub will consist of the station, which will be the centre of attraction, with the possibility of extension to nearby real estate assets that can accommodate other services.

The services available at stations are the result of agreements entered into by the FS Italiane Group with various partners including Amazon, the National Carabinieri Association (ANC), the Italian Red Cross (CRI), the Federation of General Medical Practitioners (FIMMG), Federfarma and Sport e Salute. In addition, the initiative involves a collaboration between the municipalities concerned and Infratel Italia to provide free Wi-Fi in railway stations.

  Proximity health services and digital health solutions to ensure care and treatment through service pharmacies, community spoke homes and specific digital platforms.

  Integrated security enhancement in railway stations, at bus stops or in service stations of local, collective and individual public transport.

• Community and territorial services
  Community and territorial services to support citizens

• Public Administration services
  Digital, postal and multipurpose PA services to enhance citizen services.

• Co-working and training
  Spaces equipped for working, collaborating and training, responding to new professional needs and fostering the growth of local skills.

• Intermodal integration
  Car sharing, car pooling, bike sharing and the development of slow tourism and cycle routes.

• Other services
  Pick-up points for e-commerce systems, smart building systems and environmental monitoring sensors, installation of electric vehicle charging stations and development of photovoltaic systems and energy communities.

Stazioni del Territorio will involve at least 20 stations throughout Italy and has already started in six pilot stations in the four regions of central Italy affected by the 2009 and 2016 earthquakes: The six stations of Popoli Vittorito, Matelica, Urbisaglia-Sforzacosta, Antrodoco Centro, Baiano di Spoleto and Loreto - the first five of which have been completed and the remainder scheduled for completion by 2025 - cover a total of approximately 1,400 square metres of upgraded area. Thanks to the cooperation with the municipalities and partners, the project benefits not only travellers and the surrounding areas of the municipalities involved, but also the approximately 32,000 residents of the areas concerned.

The stations were upgrading and enhanced through funding totalling around € 3 million.
