Messina, 27 April 2021
In full compliance with the timeframe set out in the Service Contract, Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) today handed over two more Pop trains to the Sicilian Region.
This brings the tally of new Pop trains now in service on the Sicilian tracks to 16, more than 1/3 of the new trains envisaged to renew the island’s fleet.
The Contract anticipates the delivery of 43 new trains to Sicily – in addition to 21 Pop locomotives, there will be five electric trains and 17 diesel-electric trains. With an investment of over 426 million euro, around 325 million is earmarked for purchasing new trains to enhance regional and metropolitan mobility on the island.
In addition to the usual measures to ensure distancing between passengers, there are dispensers with Amuchina liquid hand sanitiser/disinfectant aboard the train.
The long-term service contracts that Trenitalia has signed with the individual regions allow the FS Group Company to make important investments that generate positive repercussions both on the quality of the service offered to travellers and on the entire Italian industrial sector
Every day, there are 441 regional services on the Sicilian tracks, guaranteed by a fleet consisting of 97 trains, with 1,205 people employed by Trenitalia on the island.
