Mercitalia Rail Srl, the soociety owned by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and dedicated to rail freight, received EUR 6.1 million to implement the innovative European Rail Traffic Management System – ERTMS.

Wiithin 2017 CEF Transport Blending MAP Call, the European Commission selected the "Rail Freight Strengthening Project – Retrofitting of MIR loco E405/E412 with ETCS/ERTMS L2 baseline”. Thanks to this project carried out by Mercitalia Rail, the new technology ERTMS Level 2 baseline 3 will be implemented on 61 locomotives.

In compliance with EU regulation n. 1315/2013, the locomotives  involved will travel within the national network and along the main European Corridors.
