“The themes of innovation and sustainability with a particular focus on start-ups marked the 31st edition of the Treno Verde on its journey through Italy from Palermo to Milan. This marked the occasion,” underlined Gianfranco Battisti, CEO of FS Italiane during the final stretch of the 2019 edition of the Treno Verde, “to expound the present and future of mobility. The journey demonstrated - as always in the FS Italiane Group - the high level of attention to the environment and a strong commitment to environmentally-friendly transport.
Together with Legambiente, we have spoken with schoolchildren and visitors about the actions already taken for cleaner, sustainable and intermodal mobility. Not only that, ideas and projects have been presented that will improve our cities in the coming years by increasing the quality of life for citizens, also thanks to the ideas of the numerous start-ups hosted on the Treno Verde.
“Sustainability,” continued Battisti, "also passes through the stations acting as veritable transport hubs and the new regional trains Rock and Pop, coming to Italian tracks at the end of spring, are up to 97% recyclable and have around a 30% lower energy consumption than previous trains.
In addition, FS Italiane is committed to green development also from the financial point of view, availing of green bonds and - more generally - all sustainable finance instruments, in order to guarantee the improvement of regional and metropolitan railway transport and to entice more and more people to opt for the train, as the most ecological means of transport when travelling for work, study or tourism.”
