After completing the process of upgrading the Wi-Fi on ETR 500 trains in 2018 with the installation of new 4G modems, in 2019 a project was launched to introduce the new multi-operator Wi-Fi on ETR 500 trains for greater service continuity and connection speed.
This new system compensates for the absence of a telephone operator's signal in one area of the railway line with that of other operators.
Already present on 80% of Frecciarossa 1000 and on all Frecciargento 700, the new "Wi-Fi Fast" technology from 2020 will be extended to the Frecciarossa 500, on which Wi-Fi has already been enhanced with the update of the single-operator modems, to allow the switch from 3G to 4G navigation.
The optimisation of investments to improve internet services on trains includes plans to improve the infrastructure, extending 4G coverage even in tunnels, and the commitment of telephone operators to boosting mobile radio coverage along HS lines, in urban and extra-urban areas.
