Rome, 21 May 2025
Work on the construction site for the new Pigneto stop is proceeding according to schedule. The activities were presented today to the press and to Roberto Gualtieri, Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Rome and Government Commissioner for the Jubilee of the Catholic Church 2025, by Vincenzo Macello, Government Extraordinary Commissioner for the Pigneto interchange, Vito Miceli, Technical Director of Micos SpA, group leader of the consortium of executing companies, and Lucio Menta, Investment Director of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.
Also present at the meeting was the Lazio Region councillor for Mobility, Transport, Territory Protection, Waste Cycle, State Property and Patrimony, Fabrizio Ghera.
Regional lines FL1 Orte-Roma-Fiumicino Aeroporto and FL3 Roma-Viterbo will pass through the new Pigneto railway stop, which will also grant access from the namesake stop on Rome underground Line C.
In detail, the project consists of two phases, with the first ending with the activation of the Pigneto stop in a 'light' open-air configuration, with partial cross-covering of the railway trench. And the second, with completion of the cross-covering of the trench, and creation of a large pedestrian plaza with green spaces, children's playground, and sport and fitness facilities. The pedestrian underpass connecting with Metro C will also be activated.
The work carried out so far has involved several key preparatory operations, including setting up the construction sites, qualifying any existing facilities, and clearing any war remnants.
A significant step in the project’s progress was the demolition - over the weekend of 6 April - of the historic footbridge, located in Via del Pigneto, and the simultaneous construction of the temporary footbridge to ensure the continuity of pedestrian passage from one side of the district to the other
Work is currently underway to build the retaining bulkheads, which will pose the technical conditions to carry out the subsequent stages of ground excavation and construction of the stop works.
The total value, partly financed by NRRP resources, is around EUR 131 million.
The project will bring many tangible benefits to Pigneto and to the entire city of Rome. The area - which currently has no direct access to the railway - will finally have a stop connecting with several railway lines, through which the district will be linked with other important areas of the region and the city (e.g. the two large hospitals San Filippo Neri and Gemelli) and with Fiumicino airport.
Finally, the construction of the railway rampart roof will unite the two parts of the district, creating a 13,500 square metre square - a new urban collective place, ensuring the perfect balance between infrastructure, nature and community.
The works are part of the Cantieri Parlanti project, an initiative by FS Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, under the aegis of the Extraordinary Government Commissioner Vincenzo Macello.
The purpose of this project is providing information and communicating about the railway works under construction in a clear and transparent way, illustrating the advantages and providing up-to-date data through panels placed inside the construction sites, clearly visible to the citizens and those travelling on the lines and on the surrounding roads.
