FS Group and Tim: 4g coverage is completed on Milan-Florence high speed lines

Works between Bologna and Florence were finished on schedule

Rome, 22 December 2022

An important step forward to enhance connectivity aboard trains. Right on schedule, the FS Italiane Group, TIM as leader and the operators iliad, Vodafone and WINDTRE, have activated the installation of mobile radio coverage with 4G technology along the section and within the tunnels of the Bologna-Florence High Speed line. By last July, the upgrade to 4G technology had already been completed inside tunnels between Milan and Bologna.

The latest activation allows full coverage of the Milan-Florence HS route. All necessary technical verifications by TIM and RFI (FS Italiane Group) and the other operators shall continue in the coming weeks. In addition to upgrading the telecommunications equipment, the works also involved upgrading the line’s power supply equipment.

Throughout 2023, the works leading to 4G technology shall continue from Florence to Rome and Naples then from Turin to Milan and from Bologna to Venice as scheduled. The aim is to achieve increasingly reliable voice and data connectivity along the high-speed lines so as to guarantee a high-quality service for passengers on HS trains.

The FS Group’s objective is then to extend such activities to conventional lines as well, starting with the busiest routes for the benefit of Intercity and Regional train passengers and rail freight companies.

4G technology allows passengers to enjoy a stable and high-quality connection even in the most unfavourable areas like railway tunnels, both through the Wi-Fi service on board the train and through the direct coverage of all TLC operators that have joined the project.
