Italferr, the Italian State Railways engineering firm, as part of an international consortium of companies - comprising the Brasilian Odebrecht, the Italian Ghella and the Argentinian Lecsa - known as UTE CNS (Union Temporal de Empresas Consorzio Nuevo Sarmento), has signed a contract in Argentina for construction of the Soterramiento Sarmiento, a 36-kilometre urban railway in the city of Buenos Aires.
The works involve complete renovation of the railway line through construction of a new, 18-km underground route and nine new stations.
A tunnel with an internal diameter of 10.4 metres will provide a metropolitan-type service with a capacity of over 150 million passengers per year.
Italferr will provide the Nuevo Sarmiento Consortium with technical assistance, planning and procurement strategies for finalisation of supply and system installation contracts.
Last February, during an official visit, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi visited the railway construction site accompanied by Argentinian President Mauricio Macri.
