Reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption of the Group companies, also by encouraging a modal shift to rail in both domestic and international markets.
These are just some of the actions outlined in the Charter on reducing environmental impact, developed by UIC (International Union of Railways) and signed by the CEO of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Michele Mario Elia, with which the Italian State Railways Group confirms its commitment to the development and pursuit of policies aimed at sustainability.
As Acting Chairman of the UIC, Elia - who took office last August - will present the Charter on 28 November in Paris, during the UIC’s “Train to Paris” campaign.
In presence of Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, the CEO of the Italian State Railways Group will delve into the substance of the commitments: reduce energy consumption of the company, reduce CO2 emissions, act towards the modal shift, and communicate to the rest of the world these good practices to raise public awareness regarding the issue of environmental pollution.
“The railway industry - said the CEO of the Italian State Railways Group - is an efficient mode of transport and with the least environmental impact; however, we recognize our responsibility for the need of further improvement. This commitment sets ambitious yet achievable goals”.
