FS Engineering launches Phase One of Mumbai Metro Line 2B in India

FS Group’s engineering company is the Project Management Consultant

Rome, 17 April 2026

Phase One of the Mumbai Metro Line 2B has finally seen the light. This strategic infrastructure project will improve urban mobility in the Indian metropolis. The official ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, along with local authorities and representatives of the organisations involved in the project.

FS Engineering - an engineering firm belonging to FS Group, in a joint venture with Ayesa and Ceg, and on behalf of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) - was the Project Management Consultant for the extension of two metro lines: Line 7, which came into operation in 2023, and Line 2B.

Phase One of Line 2B runs for 5.53 kilometres, entirely on an elevated section, connecting DN Nagar to Mandale, and comprises five stations: Deshbhakt N. G. Acharya Udyan – Diamond Garden (Chembur), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk (Chembur), Deonar, Mankhurd and Maharashtranagar – Mandale.

The new section can reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h and will operate at 80 km/h. The signalling system is CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control)-powered, featuring advanced levels of automation, and power is supplied by a 25 kV AC electric traction system.

The line is equipped with integrated telecommunications systems, including fibre optics, SCADA, on-board radio and public information and announcement systems. All stations are equipped with semi-high platform doors, lifts, escalators, CCTV systems, help points and automatic ticketing systems based on QR codes and smart cards compliant with the NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) standard.

The Mandale depot comprises storage and maintenance lines, test tracks and workshops and can house a fleet of six-carriage trains with up to 2,280 passengers per train. The new infrastructure will significantly reduce traffic and emissions, and improve the quality of urban life.

By taking part in the Mumbai Metro project, FS Engineering confirms its role as (standard and high-speed) railway engineering leader, and in the urban and road transport sector, capable of providing significant contributions to strategic infrastructure for the mobility of the future.

With over 40 years of experience, a presence in 15 countries across five continents, and thousands of highly specialised professionals, FS Engineering is FS Group’s engineering technology hub. The Company promotes an integrated digital and sustainable approach to major infrastructure projects, by resorting to advanced BIM platforms, digitalised construction sites, and management of the entire infrastructure lifecycle.
