ITA Airways and Trenitalia (FS Group) sign a Memorandum of Understanding together to develop a smart, sustainable and increasingly integrated mobility ecosystem

Rome, 9 March 2026 – ITA Airways and Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a smart, sustainable and increasingly integrated intermodal transport ecosystem, based on the adoption of artificial intelligence and advanced digital solutions to remove travellers barriers.

The Memorandum was signed by the ITA Airways CEO, Jorge Eberhart, and by Trenitalia CEO, Gianpiero Strisciuglio. The signing ceremony was attended by Tommaso Tanzilli, President of the FS Italiane Group; Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and Managing Director of FS Italiane Group; and Sandro Pappalardo, President of the ITA Airways.

Purpose of the MoU is promoting efficient multimodal transport, capable of integrating rail, road and air travel in a seamless manner, thereby improving the door-to-door travel experience for passengers and contributing to the achievement of environmental sustainability goals.

The plan also includes the establishment of a joint AI Intermodality and Sustainability Lab, dedicated to the design, development and testing of priority use cases based on Artificial Intelligence and data, with particular focus on intermodality, travel flow optimisation, predictive demand management and CO₂ emissions reduction.

"By signing the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, we take a further step forward in the process launched in 2023 to develop the integrated Air–Rail ticket, whose steady growth confirms how much passengers appreciate increasingly interconnected travel solutions. Today, we want to make a qualitative leap forward: thanks to the skilful use of Artificial Intelligence, we will be able to address the operational obstacles to the intermodal experience in a structural way, simplifying processes, anticipating customer needs and making travel more efficient and sustainable - said Joerg Eberhart, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of ITA Airways - ITA Airways shares with the Ferrovie dello Stato Group the ambition and mission of connecting Italy’s regions, and to link Italy with the rest of the world. To achieve this, we need to combine machine vision, technological innovation and strategic partnerships. By signing this Memorandum, we are building a truly integrated and forward-looking mobility ecosystem.”
