Ensuring future intermodal hub railway stations have zero impact, to offer increasingly comprehensive services able to meet all needs.
This is the objective behind the GreenHub co-design project, which combines environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and innovative technologies to render stations a unique space characterised by the use of recycled and recyclable materials.
GreenHub − devised by FS Italiane, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Italferr in collaboration with Sirti and 8 start-ups − was presented in Genoa aboard the Treno Verde 2019.
As part of the GreenHub project, the Dynamo platform was experimentally installed at the Rapallo station, integrating the technological products of the 8 start-ups involved. Through the use of renewable energy, the innovative pyramidal structure offers services such as benches with integrated outlets to charge smartphones and tablets; a predisposed Wi-Fi access point; and an air monitoring and purification system. In addition, it will soon be possible to charge pedal-assisted bicycles and electric scooters in the areas outside the station.
GreenHub confirms the importance of railway stations both as important assets for increasingly-sustainable development of urban hubs and as places for aggregation and sharing, able to respond to people’s ever-evolving needs.
Sustainability - a strategic pillar for all FS Italiane activities - is an indispensable prerequisite for achieving the mobility of the future, a concept receiving increasing attention from the technological innovation sector.
To this end, FS Italiane and Legambiente have selected the start-up Bam Cicli, which presented its project in Genoa along with GreenHub, as part of the Treno Verde 2019 initiative.
Bam Clicli creates bikes in bamboo, perfect for completing a journey, for sports purposes or travelling to work. The frame combines mechanical and technical features with the aesthetic characteristics of bamboo to offer speed and dynamism together with lightness, comfort and rigidity.
Treno Verde 2019 is the FS Italiane and Legambiente campaign, under the patronage of the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection of Italy, comprised of 12 phases - from Palermo to Milan - tasked with planning future mobility with zero emissions and incentivising sustainable mobility, with a focus on intermodality and electric vehicles, starting with public transport and shared mobility.
