As a company of Polo Mercitalia (FS Italiane Group), Mercitalia Maintenance has been established, specialising in the maintenance and inspection of wagons destined for the transportation of goods.
The new company, constituted by Mercitalia Rail and Lucchini RS (Lucchini RS Group), will found and manage one of the most avant-garde workshops in Europe, to be located in the intermodal port of Milan Smistamento in proximity to the new terminal to be built by TerAlp (Polo Mercitalia).
The Mercitalia Maintenance workshop, established and managed in conjunction with Industry 4.0 principles, will be highly automated and equipped with the latest generation production lines to satisfy the majority of carriage maintenance needs for Polo Mercitalia and other eventual customers.
Mercitalia Rail and Lucchini RS are leading companies in their respective industrial sectors, possessing elevated technical expertise in the management and maintenance of railway wagons.
With a turnover of 501 million euro in 2017, Mercitalia Rail (Polo Mercitalia) is Italy's main railway company in the cargo sector and one of the most important operators in Europe.
It offers a complete range of solutions for conventional and combined transport, ensuring connections between the main ports, interports, terminals and industrial connections throughout Italy and along international corridors. The company has a significant fleet of specialised wagons (around 15,500) for transportable goods.
Lucchini RS, with a consolidated turnover of 412 million euro in 2017, specialises in the design, production and sale of upmarket wheels, axles and wheelsets, complex solutions such as digital predictive systems, ballast protectors and noise reduction systems, along with correlated services such as inspections and overhauling wheelsets, rail bogies and other relative components.
In the forged and cast steel products sector, the Group mainly supplies the automotive and mechanic, oil and gas, power generation and heavy industry sectors, particularly by leveraging the strong industrial integration from steel production to finishing processes.
