Tortona-Voghera

Tortona-Voghera

The project involves the construction of a new Command and Control System (ACC) at the Tortona station and works on the infrastructure to connect it to the Terzo Valico dei Giovi. In the second phase, plans include the four-track expansion of the line between Tortona and Voghera and the construction of an overpass at Ponte Curone to separate traffic flows between Terzo Valico dei Giovi and the existing line. Work is also planned at the Voghera station, on the Tortona side of the root, to create two 750-metre-long priority tracks. This work will enable traffic flows to be separated between the Turin/Alessandria – Piacenza and Milan – Genoa routes, thereby reducing interference in the signalling systems and potentially increasing capacity.

The first phase, which includes work at the Tortona station, is currently at the design stage. The full work schedule is subject to the availability of funding for the construction phase.

Aldo Isi was appointed Extraordinary Government Commissioner for the completion of the works.

Advantages

  • a potential increase in capacity from the current 10 trains per hour to 20 trains per hour across both lines;
  • improved service regularity by specialising traffic on the two lines;
  • upgraded infrastructure to accommodate freight trains up to 740 metres in length, thereby increasing rail freight capacity.
