The project aims to improve passenger connections between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic regions and to establish an alternative freight route for north-south connections. The works, carried out in several phases, mainly involve doubling certain track sections as variants along the Orte–Falconara Apennine crossing.

The project has received partial public funding, including NRRP funds.

With effect from 12 March 2026, the date on which Decree-Law No. 36 (published in the Official Gazette No. 58 of 11 March 2026) came into force, in accordance with Article 5 of that decree, the Chief Executive Officer of RFI SpA has taken over from the previously appointed Extraordinary Commissioners.

The advantages

Once the works are complete, it will be possible to achieve a reduction in journey times between Rome and Ancona of up to approximately 30 minutes for some services, and between Rome and Perugia of up to approximately 15 minutes, depending on the operating schedule and the completion of the two-track expansion of the Spoleto–Terni line.
Improved regularity thanks to a revised operating schedule resulting from the new infrastructure configuration and the revised service schedule, partly due to the completion of the two-track expansion between Spoleto and Terni.
Increased capacity: from 4 to 10 trains per hour on the sections where the track has been doubled (from 4 trains per hour in both directions to 10 trains per hour in each direction).
Improved service accessibility.
Upgrades to enable the passage of freight trains.
