The works form part of the project to upgrade and improve the Chivasso–Aosta railway line, in accordance with the provisions of the Framework Programme Agreement between the Valle d’Aosta Region and RFI, and are aimed at increasing and improving the performance of services along the Aosta–Ivrea–Turin line.
The main project involves the electrification of the 66-kilometre section between Ivrea and Aosta. Three new electrical substations will be built in Donnas, Châtillon-Saint-Vincent and Aosta.
The project also includes infrastructure works at stations to improve the efficiency of level crossings and reduce the time taken to cross them, whilst simultaneously improving the accessibility of stations through new underpasses and overpasses and the raising of platforms in Nus, Hône-Bard, Montanaro and Strambino. Plans also include a complete technological upgrade of the train protection system along the Ivrea–Aosta line, as well as assessments of the works required on engineering structures to increase the maximum line speed.
The Ivrea–Aosta project is fully funded, including through NRRP funds.
