Expansion of the Venice - Trieste line

Expansion of the Venice - Trieste line

The project, divided into two main phases, involves works on the Venice – Trieste line aimed at upgrading the technology along the Mestre – Ronchi Sud section and removing certain level crossings, and works on the line’s engineering structures, resulting in an increase in the line’s speed limit to 200 km/h for P-class trains, two new Shunting Yards, track variants at Portogruaro, Latisana, n the River Isonzo and between Ronchi dei Legionari and Aurisina.

The benefits of the project for commuters and tourists will include shorter journey times, increased capacity and service regularity. Furthermore, the improvement in the line’s performance in terms of long-distance traffic will enable the line to be brought into line with European freight corridor standards.

The project has received partial public funding, including NRRP funds.

Aldo Isi was appointed Government Commissioner for the completion of the works.

Advantages

  • Increased theoretical capacity of the line from the current 7 trains per hour to 10 trains per hour in both directions;
  • Reduced journey times of up to 10 minutes for long-distance services (first phase) and by a further 20 minutes (second phase);
  • Improved reliability thanks to more flexible technology;
  • Removal of axle load restrictions and introduction of 740-metre trainsets.
