The project involves the construction of a new connection branching off from the Bergamo–Rovato line. The line will be approximately 5 km long in total, of which around 1 km will run parallel to the Bergamo–Montello section from Bergamo. The line will run directly to the airport, with a new station connected via an underground link featuring a moving walkway leading straight to the airport. There will also be a connection from the station to the shopping centre.

The project to build a rail link to Orio al Serio Airport is fully funded, including through NRRP funds.

With effect from 12 March 2026, the date on which Decree-Law No. 36 (published in the Official Gazette No. 58 of 11 March 2026) came into force, in accordance with Article 5 of that decree, the Chief Executive Officer of RFI SpA has taken over from the previously appointed Extraordinary Commissioners.
