Purpose of the Udine Junction Completion Project is to divert freight traffic onto the bypass line, thereby reducing traffic at the Udine station and in the city centre, streamlining freight traffic flows on the related lines, and optimising train stabling for passenger traffic.
The overall Project includes the construction of a single Central Computer Controlled Shunting System (ACC) for both the Udine and Udine Parco sites, built in accordance with the new Local Development Plans (PRG).
Given the complexity of the works, they were divided into several implementation phases and projects:
- Phase 0 – New ACC on the existing rail level: Construction of the new Central Computer Controlled Shunting System for Udine and Udine Parco, including any preparatory works, and construction of the Fascio Sacca group of tracks (currently under construction).
- Cargnacco Shunting Yard: Construction of the new Cargnacco Shunting Yard, removal of all interfering level crossings, and construction of alternative road links (tender process currently under way).
- Phase 1: Phased redevelopment of the Udine Centrale Local Development Plan (PRG). More specifically, redevelopment of the Venice side and Udine Parco roots, and reconfiguration of the Central Computer Controlled Shunting System. These works are divided into two sub-phases: Sub-phase 1.1: Refurbishment of the Udine Centrale - Venice side root. Sub-phase 1.2: Refurbishment of the Udine Centrale - Udine Parco side root.
- Phase 2: Construction of the double-track section between Udine Centrale and the VAT Shunting Yard (final project completed; construction will commence once funding is secured).
- Phase 3–4: Refurbishment of the Udine Centrale - Venice side Local Development Plan, and of the Gorizia side passenger tracks layout (final project to be updated based on the optimisations notified to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region).
- Phase 6.0: First part of Phase 6, concerning the track-doubling works on the link road connecting the VAT Shunting Yard to Udine Parco/Udine Centrale, and all noise barriers associated to it (final project to be updated based on the optimisations notified to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region).
- Phase 5: New Udine Bivi Central Computer Controlled Shunting System and track-doubling works between the Cividale and Laipacco junctions (final project to be updated based on the optimisations notified to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region).
- Phase 6: Completion of the track-doubling works on the link road connecting the VAT Shunting Yard to Udine Parco/Udine Centrale (final project to be updated based on the optimisations notified to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region).
The advantages
The project’s completion will bring the following benefits:
- Divert freight traffic on the link road to free the Udine station and the city centre.
- Streamline the flow of freight traffic on the connecting lines.
- Optimise train stabling for passenger traffic.
- Modernise the overall structure of the Udine Junction to meet any future needs.
Consequently, the main objective is to optimise freight and passenger traffic passing through the hub and meet its transport demand.
