The project involves the closure of the northern railway ring in Rome along the Valle Aurelia–Tiburtina section, and the construction of new links to the Tyrrhenian line (Aurelia junction) and the slow line to Florence (Tor di Quinto junction).
The project also includes plans to build a new station at Tor di Quinto , which will provide a connection with the ASTRAL Rome–Viterbo railway line, and to expand the Valle Aurelia–Vigna Clara section – currently a single-track line – to a double track.
For the Tor di Quinto – Roma Tiburtina section, following the public consultation, a Feasibility Document of Design Alternatives (DocFAP) has been launched to assess any further infrastructure and service options, with the aim of ensuring a high-frequency metropolitan service.
The results of this DocFAP may lead to a review of the current plans for the links.
The project will upgrade passenger transport services at the Rome junction and create a bypass around the capital for freight traffic.
