Bussoleno-Avigliana-Orbassano

Bussoleno-Avigliana-Orbassano

The new line between Avigliana and Orbassano will follow an alternative route for approximately 24 km, of which around 17 km will be in tunnels, starting from a connection with the existing Turin–Modane line at Chiusa S. Michele. Running southwards, the new line will then link up with the Turin Orbassano facility, where work is planned to redevelop the Orbassano yard. At the same time, work will proceed to upgrade the technology and infrastructure of the existing line between Bussoleno and Avigliana, whilst new works to connect the tunnel with the new line variant to Orbassano will be given secondary priority. As part of the project to upgrade the existing line, in addition to technological upgrades to the line and infrastructure, plans include the removal of level crossings, the renewal and upgrading of the electric traction systems, and the construction of a new facility in San Didero to support the management of the existing industrial junction. The project will be completed with noise mitigation measures for rail traffic and upgrades to the infrastructure to allow the passage of long freight trains, involving works in Condove as well as the aforementioned new P.M. S. Didero facility.

The project has received partial public funding.

Calogero Mauceri was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for completion of the works.

Advantages

The main benefits of the overall project include:

  • a potential increase in capacity from the current 10 trains per hour to 20 trains per hour across both lines;
  • improved service regularity by specialising traffic on the two lines;
  • The ability to handle trains up to 740 m in length at the Turin-Orbassano facility;
  • a potential reduction in journey times.
