FS Group launches the 5g network trial on the HS/HC Turin–Milan line

FS Italiane Group has begun the trial for its 5G network along the HS/HC Torino - Milano Line, on a stretch of approximately 60 kilometres between Turin and Greggio. This initial trial is part of the Group’s proprietary connectivity project, developed to support technological innovations in the rail system and passenger services.

The pilot project’s infrastructure was completed in early October and work is currently underway to test the network’s performance in a real-world operational environment. Purpose of the trail is to assess the quality and reliability of the connection, including in tunnels and at high speeds, and to define the technological architecture for any future developments.

Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of the FS Italiane Group, stated: “We are testing advanced connectivity solutions along high-speed rail lines, with the aim of exploring new technological opportunities to enhance the travel experience and improve infrastructural efficiency.”

The initiative falls within the TLC Programme set out in FS Group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, whose aim is establishing a high-capacity, reliable telecommunications infrastructure to support increasingly advanced services.

Moreover, the trail will analyse the ways in which the 5G technology can improve the on-board Wi-Fi service, especially for connection stability aspects under complex operating conditions.

The project was implemented on existing RFI and TIM infrastructures, with the integration of five new dedicated sites. The pilot section will test these technological solutions on the field, and gather useful data to guide future decisions.

With this trial, FS Italiane Group continues its journey of technological innovation, exploring solutions that can supporting the evolution of rail and digital services.
