Rome-Pescara line

Rome-Pescara line

The project involves significant infrastructure and technological upgrades along the Rome–Pescara line, divided into several phases and aimed at improving transport links between Lazio and Abruzzo. The works to double the track, increase the speed and upgrade the line will reduce journey times from the current 3 hours and 20 minutes to around 2 hours.

The project has received partial public funding.

Aldo Isi was appointed Extraordinary Government Commissioner for the completion of the works.

Advantages

  • Reduced journey times: Rome to Pescara in around 2 hours, compared with the current 3 hours 20 minutes, with journey times reduced by up to 80 minutes (once the entire project is complete).
  • Increased capacity: from 4 to 10 trains per hour on the sections where the track has been doubled, with the possibility of introducing metro-type services between Chieti and Pescara.
  • Improvements to the speed and regularity of services between Pescara and L'Aquila, thanks in part to other works currently underway and planned along the L'Aquila–Sulmona line (Sulmona Bypass, new Sulmona S.Rufina stop).
  • Upgraded capacity (gauge and weight limits) to facilitate the growth of freight traffic.
  • Improved connectivity at Abruzzo International Airport, thanks to the opening of the Pescara Airport station, ensuring an intermodal connection with trains.
  • Improved traffic flow thanks to the removal of the level crossing and the elimination of traffic disruptions
