The project involves the construction of a new freight terminal near the future Hirpinia station, which is currently being built under a separate contract. The new hub, configured in a “dead-end” layout, will consist of a specific yard for freight traffic serving the Ufita Valley and surrounding areas, designed to facilitate intermodal transport.
The terminal will be built to the north of the future Hirpinia station, approximately 1 km away. Once Operational Phase 1 has been activated, it will be possible to access the terminal via the Naples–Bari route, on the Naples side. With the launch of Operational Phase 2, the terminal connection to the Naples–Bari route (Bari side) will be completed.
The link between the terminal and the Naples–Bari line on the Naples side, which forms part of Operational Phase 1, involves the construction of a single-track, electrified section branching off from the planned Hirpinia station, approximately 1 km long. The yard covers an area of approximately 1 km and will feature three non-electrified tracks and three lanes for container storage. The movement of road vehicles within the yard is facilitated by a dedicated internal road network. The forecourt is complemented by seven technical buildings to support terminal operations.
There are also plans to build a new access road to the terminal, linking up with the access road designed for the Hirpinia station.
Under Law 199/2025 (known as the 2026 Budget Law), the Chief Executive Officer of RFI has been appointed Special Administrator of the Ufita Valley Logistics Platform.
