The project for speed improvements and infrastructure and technological upgrades along the Milan–Genoa line involves various line adjustments, modifications to civil engineering works (the most significant of which is the bridge over the River Po at Bressana), the upgrading of the Bressana Bottarone area by extending the station platforms to a length of 750 m to allow the passage of long trains, the construction of a new Shunting Yard (freight station) at Turago, and the improvement of accessibility for all through the raising of station platforms and the construction of a new underpass at the existing Certosa di Pavia station.
The works also include an upgrade to the line’s technology to allow for higher speeds, the implementation of an upgraded traffic management system with a remote control centre in Milan (ACC-M), the preparation for the subsequent installation of the ERTMS system, and the carrying out of checks along the line to allow the passage of wider trains (freight trains carrying road semi-trailers).
The project to upgrade the Milan–Genoa line has received partial public funding, including through NRRP funds.
