Rome, 26 September 2025
The new-generation Frecciarossa 1000 lands on Italian tracks with the first trip on the Roma-Napoli HS line.
Trenitalia's (FS Group) high-speed train - now more technological, more sustainable and more international than ever - began its official run on Sunday 28 September. With an investment of over EUR 1.3 billion, 36 convoys are expected to be delivered between now and 2029, with ten trains per year on average, and the option for a further ten in the future. Renewal of the train fleet to ensure an increasingly modern, innovative and sustainable service is one of the key objectives of FS Group's 2025-2029 Strategic Plan.
The promotional journey was attended by the CEO and General Manager of FS Group, Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, and the CEO and General Manager of Trenitalia, Gianpiero Strisciuglio.
Designed by Hitachi Rail and built at the Pistoia and Naples production sites, the new Frecciarossa 1000 are designed to travel in Italy and on seven other European rail networks: France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. They feature state-of-the-art elements and offer a more comfortable travel experience, focusing on passenger needs. Technologically more advanced than the previous fleet, they can reach a top speed of 300 kilometres/hour, with a maximum approved speed of 360 km/h. They are also equipped with an advanced traction system to improve efficiency.
The green drive brought the recyclability rate to 97.1%, a full 2.7% higher than last generation’s, and a material recovery rate of 98.2%, up 2.4%. The use of electric motors minimises energy consumption and makes the Frecciarossa 1000 even more sustainable.
The new trains, while retaining the current exterior design and livery, introduce new elements in the interiors and on-board instruments, in the sign of Made-in-Italy style. The Frecciarossa 1000 restyling was completed by high-quality materials, ergonomic furnishing solutions, more welcoming environments, and advanced digital systems for travel management and on-board information.
