Rome, 21 August 2025

Sixty-one new Regionale trains, Trenitalia‘s brand (FS Group), delivered from the beginning of 2025 to date, for a total investment of approximately EUR 500 million. An achievement in line with the objectives of the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, which by 2027 plans to increase to 1,061 the number of new generation trains destined for commuters and travellers throughout Italy.

Thanks to Service Contracts with the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces, commissioners of the service, 596 new-generation trains were delivered to date, which, added to the 335 purchased previously, bring the number of new trains in circulation to 931. With further deliveries this year and those planned by 2027, 80% of the entire Regionale fleet will be refurbished, for a total investment of EUR 7 billion.

Renewal of regional rail transport is one of the pillars of our 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, which envisages investments of 100 billion euros over a five-year period’, said Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of the FS Italiane Group. ‘A constantly evolving process that aims to offer modern, sustainable trains, with high standards of comfort and safety. Regionale represents a strategic lever for an increasingly integrated and connected mobility, capable of enhancing territories and accompanying the social, environmental and cultural transformations of a country on the move.’

With a capillary service that every day guarantees more than 6,000 journeys and carries over 400 million passengers a year, Regionale confirms itself as a solid and well-rooted reality in the territory. A model that combines operational efficiency and attention to sustainability, continuing on the path of innovation and continuous improvement, in line with the needs of a country looking to the future.
