Milano Design Week: FS Group presents "Pensiero Binario"

The installation, on display at the ADI Design Museum, tells the the story of the country's mobility transformation. The Group's commitment to the rail network modernisation plan continues

Milan, 8 April 2025

FS Italiane Group took part in the Milano Design Week, scheduled from 7 to 13 April, with the installation 'Pensiero Binario' (Binary Thinking), dedicated to one of the fundamental elements of railway infrastructure: the track. The work, created by designers Giulio Iacchetti and Luca Madonini and on display at the ADI Design Museum in Milan, represents the union between tradition and innovation, symbolising FS Group's mission to build the present and future of the country's mobility.

The design of its section is a timeless icon: a harmonious, 'mushroom' shape, conceived complying with all engineering and design standards. Inside, the installation retraces the design process that led to the modern-day track. Authentic rail rods that you can touch are on display, to experience and understand one of the pivotal elements of the infrastructure, also on a tactile level. The installation, made of wood from FSC-certified forests, is designed to be modular, reusable and displayed even in more compact modules.

Externally, the narrative focuses on the transformation of the country the FS Group has initiated through the Strategic Works, implementing an extraordinary, unprecedented modernisation plan for the railway network. Thanks to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) funds, the Group has already realised more than EUR 12 billion, which is higher than planned.

To date, an average of 1,200 construction sites per day are open, 500 of which engaged in ordinary and extraordinary network maintenance, and about 700 to new works. These projects are indispensable to achieve the NRRP’s goals and make the railway network more modern, efficient and safe. Indeed, the aim is to raise the efficiency standards of the network so as to ensure an increasingly modern, integrated, accessible, high-performance, reliable and fast infrastructure for passenger and freight transport.

In addition to carrying out maintenance works to renew the existing network, FS Group is engaged in the construction of new railway lines to eliminate the infrastructure gaps that still exist between North and South, and to put more extensive infrastructure alongside the high-speed network, which has so far seen its main development along the Turin-Milan-Rome-Salerno axis. One of the ongoing projects is the Brescia-Verona-Padua line and, to strengthen the South, the completion of the Naples-Bari line, the new Salerno-Reggio Calabria link and Sicily’s infrastructural development to benefit from the high-speed system from Palermo to Milan.

At the same time, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana information and communication campaign on the construction sites planned for 2025 has begun. Aim of the campaign is to inform passengers in stations, through traditional media and the RFI website, also through a dedicated section, to reach citizens and stakeholders in a timely and widespread manner. The works have been planned down to the last detail to minimise issues and maximise long-term benefits for everyone.
