FS Group, more than 27 million people travelling at Easter and for spring holidays

FS Group, through its subsidiaries Trenitalia, FS Treni Turistici Italiani and Busitalia, guaranteed a varied and sustainable offer to meet this period’s special mobility needs

Rome, 18 April 2025

More than 27 million people chose the train - the green means of transport par excellence - to travel during the spring holidays associated with Easter, 25 April and 1 May. FS Group, through its subsidiaries Trenitalia, FS Treni Turistici Italiani and Busitalia, guaranteed a varied and sustainable offer.

To meet the period’s mobility needs, six additional Frecciarossa trains ran between Milan, Rome and Naples on selected days, and double trains were made available to expand the available seats. In addition, Frecciarossa Night trains were available on selected days between Milan and Calabria and between Milan and Puglia.

Regionale trains connect 1,700 locations in Italy, including art cities, quaint little towns, and mountain and seaside resorts. Moreover, two Sicilia Express rides by FS Treni Turistici Italiani were activated to allow Sicilian residents to return home for the Easter holidays. The Intercity Night service was a very popular option, as it allows travelling at night and reaching your destination early in the morning. The Eurocity to/from Switzerland also performed well, with a significant increase in arrivals to Genoa and Bologna. Busitalia also strengthened its offer with many connections to airports, cultural destinations and nature resorts.

Driving the bookings for spring holidays were art cities, and Rome in particular, thanks also to the Jubilee boost, followed by Naples, with the nearby Royal Palace of Caserta, Pompeii and Paestum, and Venice. For long-distance travel, many decided to opt for seaside destinations, such as northern and southern Apulia, Calabria and Campania. Small towns in Piedmont, Tuscany and Umbria are always popular, starting with Assisi, an obligatory stop for pilgrims arriving in Italy. There was also great interest in Liguria destinations, such as the Cinque Terre, and Sicily, such as Palermo and the Baroque area.

High-Speed solutions

During the spring long weekends, Frecciarossa increased its connections and available seats to offer an even more frequent and comfortable service to its passengers. On selected days, there will be two extra connections along the Adriatic coast, between Milan and Pescara, and two extra connections between Bolzano and Pescara on 1, 4 and 31 May and 2 June. In addition, on peak passenger flow dates, a further eight trains will stop in Riccione, for a total of 12 connections per day. On peak days, between 25 April and 2 June, new extraordinary departures are planned for six Frecciarossa trains that will travel between Milan, Rome and Naples, plus double trains, to expand the quantity of seats available to travellers. Night Frecciarossa trains between Milan and Calabria and between Milan and Puglia are also making a comeback. From 18 April, there will also be four FrecciaLink connections - the service provided by dedicated buses in connection with Frecciarossa - to/from the Pompeii and Sorrento ruins, with departures from Milan, Reggio Emilia AV, Bologna, Florence and Rome. Another popular option is the train+bus connections to Perugia, Assisi and Matera, which can be reached from major Italian cities.

More and more tourists on Intercity and Eurocity trains

One of the favourite solutions by travellers - in addition to the Intercity trains that connect Italy on a daily basis - is the Intercity Night, which allows travellers to travel at night and reach their destination early in the morning. In 2024 it was chosen by 2 million passengers, 5% up compared to 2023, and this trend is confirmed in 2025. Particularly popular is the Eurocity option to/from Switzerland, with a significant increase in arrivals to Genoa and Bologna, which were reactivated in September 2024, with the reopening of the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland.

Regionale trains to discover Italy

With around 1,700 locations reached and a network spanning all Italian regions, Regionale trains are perfect for visiting Italy. More and more people are choosing Regionale to rediscover the pleasure of slow, sustainable and authentic travel. An easy and accessible way to get around art cities - such as Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice - and to be surprised by uniquely fascinating places like Pompeii, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and the Cinque Terre. With the Parchi Line tour, you can travel between the main archaeological parks in Campania, from Herculaneum to Pompeii and Paestum. And quaint little towns are also winning many tourists over: Cortona, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Urbino, Fermo, Spoleto, Orvieto, Lecce, Taormina and Syracuse.

During spring holidays, the offer was expanded with additional connections and seasonal itineraries. Two new trains will reach Sicily, between Agrigento, Italian Capital of Culture 2025, and Palermo 'Falcone e Borsellino' airport. And from 25 April onward, the Taormina Line, the Barocco Line and the Cefalù Line - designed to experience the area between art, sea and culture - are also back. Back on ‘track’ are also the Salento Line in Apulia, the Castelli Romani Line in Lazio, and the Etruschi Line and the Tuscany Line in Tuscany, which connect cities of art, hilly landscapes and small villages filled with history. And if you leave by plane, connections to and from the airports of Fiumicino - Leonardo Express - and Palermo Punta Raisi are always available. Continue your journey beyond the station, with the intermodal train+Link services, connecting airports, tourist ports and destinations that cannot be reached directly by train.

The Sicilia Express with FS Treni Turistici Italiani

During the Easter long weekend, the Sicilia Express - the connection between Piedmont and Sicily designed to offer a travel opportunity to Sicilians living in northern Italy for work or study - was also provided. The offer, achieved through a partnership between FS Treni Turistici Italiani and the Regional Department of Infrastructure and Mobility of the Sicilian Region, connected Turin, Milan, Parma, Bologna, Florence and Rome to Palermo and Syracuse on 17 April, with the return journey scheduled for 26 April.

The Busitalia offer

Busitalia also strengthened its offer with many connections to airports, cultural destinations, art cities, and nature resorts. In particular, the Assisi Link service will be enhanced on the occasion of the most important religious events, and the Umbria Airlink between Perugia/Assisi and the regional airport was increased, with up to 32 trips per day. The Orvieto Link and the navigation service on Lake Trasimeno was also strengthened, with up to 60 trips on holidays to Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese. Integrated tourist links in Umbria and Veneto were confirmed (including Spoleto, Narni, Marmore, Piediluco, Chioggia-Sottomarina). The Padova-Venice Marco Polo Airport service was extended, and was also active on 1 May. Airlink connections to Salerno and Bergamo Orio al Serio airports are also active, with new timetables and promotional fares from Verona and Brescia. Finally, the direct connection from Florence to The Mall outlet continues.
