FS Group, Sicily: new operations room and modern traffic technology

Multi-station Command and Control System (SCCM) activated in Palermo. One of the most advanced supervision and control technologies for the Sicilian railway network. EUR 9.5 million investment

Palermo, 14 April 2025

Another step forward in the overall modernisation of Sicily's railway infrastructure. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Group) completed the restyling of the Traffic Operations Room in Palermo and activated the SCCM (Multi-Station Command and Control System), a modern system for traffic supervision and regulation.

Italferr (FS Group) played a decisive role in synergy with RFI, designing the intervention and supervised its realisation through the Project Management, and confirming its excellence in the field of Italian railway engineering.

The interventions, worth about EUR 9.5 million, involved a total of 50 people from FS Italiane Group and its contractors.

The Palermo Traffic Operations Room manages approximately 500 trains, running everyday on the 1370 km Sicilian network, a coordinated and effective intervention on breakdowns and information to travellers. On a daily basis it works in synergy with the Sala Blu for assistance to travellers with reduced mobility. Around 100 people work there every day, alternating over a 24-hour period.  Palermo's is one of RFI’s 15 Territorial Rooms, all constantly in contact with the National Operations Room in Rome.

The activation of the SCCM is the first evolution of the technology that will interface with the future Central Computerised Multi-Station Controllers (ACCM), which allow to control all stations on the same section of line, and with the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) systems that allow an improvement in traffic regularity and service quality.

The new Palermo SCCM was built using innovative technological solutions on large-format monitors (75''), which allow for more efficient traffic management on the main routes: Palermo Airport-Palermo Centrale-Messina, Messina-Catania-Siracusa.

The renewed technologies will lead to a significant improvement in service quality and traffic regularity, ensuring greater reliability of the infrastructure and optimisation of issue management.
