FS Italiane supports The Ocean Race with a dedicated Intercity train

Until 2 July, the Italian leg of the sporting event in the name of sustainability

Genoa, 26 June 2023

Starting today, an Intercity train bearing images from The Ocean Race shall travel the entire length of Liguria, going as far as Puglia, thus giving visibility to the evocative round-the-world sailing event that has chosen the city of Genoa for its first port of call in Italy.

On the convoy’s first stop in Liguria, Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci and Liguria Region Transport Councillor Augusto Sartori, together with Trenitalia CEO and General Manager Luigi Corradi, visited the train and admired the livery that will travel along the Milan-Genoa-Ventimiglia, Milan-Genoa-Livorno and Milan-Bari-Lecce routes.

“It was a pleasure to welcome to Genoa the train dedicated to The Ocean Race,” states Mayor Bucci. “I wish to thank Ferrovie dello Stato for standing with our city and with this global event that, in addition to the sporting aspect, seeks to send an important message about the environment worldwide. The Intercity train will traverse all of Italy and bring with it all the beauty of Genoa and the love for the sea of The Ocean Race.”

“This Intercity train that will travel through Italy is an excellent vehicle for promoting an event as important as the Grand Finale of The Ocean Race, an internationally-renowned sailing competition,” affirms Regional Councillor Sartori. “The train will undoubtedly be a great attraction for tourists wanting to witness a unique spectacle not only from a sporting point of view but also from a scenic one – the competing sailboats are in fact a marvel.”

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane supports The Ocean Race, an event dedicated to sport, sustainability and innovation.

“The Ocean Race’s arrival in Genoa is a historic event and we have decided to be among the protagonists,” declares Corradi. “The Intercity train dedicated to round-the-world crewed sailing will help attract to Genoa tourists and anyone wanting to head to Liguria. This represents an additional effort by Trenitalia to achieve common sustainability objectives, a central component of our corporate strategy that has the train as the green vehicle par excellence.”

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is thus alongside The Ocean Race, the event in the name of sport, sustainability, innovation and gender diversity which, until 2 July, will involve and give visibility to the Ligurian capital.

On the occasion of the event, a promotion has been activated for passengers on Trenitalia Intercity and Regional trains, who will be offered a 10 euro discount on entry tickets for the Acquario di Genova, the AcquarioVillage, the PianetAcquarium and the Città dei Bambini Acquario. The offer is available upon presenting your Trenitalia ticket at the Acquario di Genova ticket office until 2 July.

The Genoa event focuses on care and respect for the sea as an important Italian heritage, whilst simultaneously calling for healthy and conscious tourism capable of enhancing the country’s natural beauty even more. It is from these premises that FS Italiane’s support for The Ocean Race starts, as an important occasion seeing the typical fun of the summer combine with occasions to reflection on how the connection between human beings and nature must pass through the ways of life able to protect the planet. These are values that have always characterised Ferrovie dello Stato’s daily commitment towards collective, multimodal and thus sustainable mobility.

Also in the name of green transport, visitors will be able to contribute to making the event sustainable, starting with opting to travel by train as the preferred mode of transport for their journey. From the Genova Brignole railway station, it is actually possible to reach the Ocean Live Park – organised in the area of the Levante Water Front – on foot, by bike sharing, by taking Line 31 of the urban transport service or the dedicated shuttle of Line 10. Alternatively, from the Genova Piazza Principe station, head to the Porto Antico event area on foot, by metro, bike sharing or urban transport (Lines 35, 1, 18 or 3). A mobility system has even been organised to encourage the use of public and collective transport – be it by train, bus or taxi – to reach the Ocean Live Park with free shuttles from the Brignole station and from Porto Antico every 10 to 15 minutes.
