Trenitalia, Sardinia: today sees the first portion of the supply of new trains completed

The regional fleet modernisation programme continues

Cagliari, 7 January 2021

Completed today, with delivery of the last two Swing trains, was first batch of the supply of new trains per the 2017-2025 Service Contract signed by Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) with the Sardinia Region.

There are now ten next-generation locomotives travelling on Sardinian tracks, significantly lowering the average age of vehicles in use on the island’s railway network.

Further innovations are in sight thanks to the signing of an integrative document on 30 December 2020, which will continue the process of updating the Trenitalia fleet with the arrival of 12 modern “bimodal” trains as of next year, being more capacious, environmentally-friendly and comfortable.

Thanks to their technical and constructive characteristics (powered by both diesel and electric engines, more seats and greater comfort on board), these trains will allow a significant reduction in pollutant emissions, with benefits in terms of environmental respect and quality of service.
