Trenitalia: the first Rock train reaches Campania

The first of 37 new locomotives rocks up to the Campania Region

Naples, 23 July 2020

Ahead of time, the new Rock train arrives in Campania as the first of 37 new Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) locomotives, adding to the 24 Jazz trains to have already hit the tracks of the Region. A plan that – by 2025 – will guarantee the complete renewal of the regional fleet, as set out in the 2019-2033 Service Contract signed in December 2019 by the Campania Region and Trenitalia. The contract involved investments of more than 680 million euro, of which approximately 390 million euro (208.9 million from Trenitalia + 180 million euro from the Campania Region) was put towards renewal of the fleet.

DELIVERY - The hand-over ceremony at the Napoli Centrale Maintenance Plant was attended by Vincenzo De Luca, as President of the Campania Region, and Orazio Iacono, the CEO and General Director of Trenitalia. In attendance were Luca Cascone, President of the IV Transport and Mobility Commission of the Campania Region, Sabrina De Filippis, Director of Trenitalia’s Regional Passenger Division and Pietro Diamantini, Regional Director of Trenitalia Campania.

SPACE AND COMFORT - More agile, more capacious and more comfortable. The Rock is a high-capacity double-decker train able to greatly improve the travel experience, with provisions comparable to that of a subway: 160 kilometres/hour top speed with an acceleration of 1.10 metres/second2, over 600 seats, more room for travellers in the seats, larger windows to admire the beauties of the country, intranet portals, a stroller area, LED lighting, a new air-conditioning system, plus USB and 220 V outlets for charging tablets and smartphones.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL - Four spots are dedicated to disabled passengers, being located in the immediate vicinity of the access doors and bathrooms, in order to minimise the need to move about the train. The carriages are constructed in such a way as to facilitate people with reduced mobility boarding and alighting.

SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY - Completing the features are 9 bike spots fitted with power outlets to charge the new-generation models along with luggage compartments, 50 CCTV cameras for safe travel and monitors for passenger information that are twice as large as before. Not only capacious but also environmentally-friendly: Rock is an environmentally-sustainable train, up to 97% recyclable, with a 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to previous locomotives.

SUPPORT TO TOURISM - The summer season is an opportunity for reviving the economy linked to tourism, to be supported and incentivised via new links, including intermodal travel, heading towards the most coveted and sought-after destinations. Besides Trenitalia’s Regional trains, great developments come with the integrated train+bus and train+ship connections, such as the “Cilento Link”, “Costiera Link” and “Pompei Link”, with which it will be possible to reach the main seaside and tourist destinations on the southern Tyrrhenian coast of the region and the Amalfi Coast in a way that is easy, safe and sustainable. In addition, special fares and reductions are available for trips scheduled in summer 2020, including the Estate Insieme promo – just launched – to travel without limitations on all regional trains and to any destination.

THE NEW TRENITALIA APP - Trenitalia has recently introduced an App that is being tested on 1,500 regional trains to allows travellers to determine the number of seats available aboard the regional services in real time, thanks to the digital counter. An algorithm displays the turnout trends aboard the train via three different colours (red, yellow, green) until purchases are no longer possible due to seats being sold out. A new function to protect people’s health.
