Gianluigi Castelli, President of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, is the new President of the Union Internationale des Chemins de fer (UIC), the world association that gathers all operators in the railway sector.
«I am proud to assume such an important commitment that highlights the leadership of FS Italiane nationally and internationally," said Gianluigi Castelli. "We will work in Italy with the UIC to improve the safety of the railway sector, the standardization of systems for cost reduction, and technological exchange with other countries. Our goal will also be" - continued Castelli - "to guarantee the development of a public integrated mobility system and to promote the process of digitization of railway companies throughout the world. We will also support the development of intercontinental railway freight corridors (One Belt One Road), banks that favour the development of railways, and the development of finance schemes for sustainable projects (green bonds). Finally, we will carefully monitor the introduction of self-driving vehicles».
The UIC is the international organization of the railway sector that brings together over 200 companies, from 100 countries, operating in all five continents. The UIC's mission is to promote worldwide rail transport to meet the challenges of mobility and sustainable development.
