The renewal plan for Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) Regionale train fleet continues. 108 new trains were delivered in 2025, with a total investment of EUR 1 billion. The programme, in line with the objectives of FS Group's 2025-2029 Strategic Plan and its latest updates, envisages the delivery of a further 103 trains, reaching a total of 1,081 new-generation vehicles by 2027.
In 2025, new deliveries covered the entire country, based on Service Contracts signed with the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the service's commissioners. More specifically, 51 trains were allocated to Central Italy, 25 to Northern Italy, and 32 to Southern Italy and the Islands, to strengthen the regional rail transport offer throughout the country.
With 643 new-generation trains delivered to date, plus the 335 previously purchased, Trenitalia's Regionale fleet can now count on 978 new-generation trains in circulation. The overall economic investment is equal to EUR 7 billion.
“By renewing its regional fleet, Trenitalia and FS Group fully express their industrial capacity” said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Trenitalia CEO and General Manager. “We are investing more and more in high-tech, comfortable and sustainable trains with the aim of raising the operational standards of our service. Suffice it to say that, once the plan is completed, Italy will have the youngest regional fleet in Europe, with trains “younger” than 10 years on average. Our choices are geared to promote the needs of passenger who travel every day for work, study or leisure, with a clear responsibility: to reduce distances and drive regional growth.”
Trenitalia, with its Regionale service, guarantees capillary mobility throughout the country, with over 6,000 daily connections and more than 400 million passengers transported every year. The offer focuses on sustainability and innovation, also through 180 Links - intermodal solutions by train+bus, ships and other means of transport - to reach even the most remote destinations with ease, enhancing the efficiency and quality of regional transport along the entire Peninsula.
