An important milestone for the new High Speed/High Capacity Naples-Bari railway line: excavation works on the 1,650-metre-long San Lorenzo Tunnel, located in San Lorenzo Maggiore, in the province of Benevento, have been completed.
This brings the number of tunnels completed in the entire lot to four, following those in Reventa, Limata and Ponte. Overall, excavation progress has reached 87% of planned activities.
The San Lorenzo Tunnel is the second longest in the Telese-Vitulano lot and was built using traditional methods and innovative techniques to cope with the specific geological characteristics of the terrain.
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, under Italferr’s Project Management (both companies belonging to FS Italiane Group) entrusted the works to the Telese Scarl Consortium formed by Ghella, Itinera, Salcef and Coget Impianti, for a total economic investment of approximately EUR 500 million.
The future HS/HC Naples-Bari line will run for 145 kilometres, with 15 tunnels, 25 viaducts and 20 stations and stops along the route. The project - part of the European TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean rail corridor, was partially funded with NRRP funds, and is part of FS Italiane Group's 'Cantieri Parlanti', relating the progress of major infrastructure works to keep citizens and local communities abreast of the expected benefits and furtherance.
