Rome, 23 April 2025
FS Group set up an extraordinary plan to enhance transport services to Rome between 23 and 27 April, following the death of the Holy Father, in cooperation with the Civil Protection Department, which coordinated the emergency and logistical operations required to welcome the worshippers.
Trenitalia upgraded its offer: Frecce and Intercity offered an average of approximately 110,000 seats per day, while Regionale provided more connections to Roma San Pietro station from Roma Termini, Ostiense, Tiburtina, Tuscolana and Fiera di Roma, for a total of 150,000 seats per day in the Rome Hub. Additional charter trains were also made available for pilgrims. Trenitalia provided an extra 300 people in all its facilities, to ensure greater assistance to passengers and prompt intervention in case of need.
In addition, those travelling on Frecce and Intercity trains to/from the capital - either individually or in groups - were able to take advantage of a 40% discount on the basic price, by using the code 'ROMA' when purchasing their tickets.
Through Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, FS set up extraordinary safety measures at the Roma Termini, Roma Tiburtina, Roma S. Pietro, Valle Aurelia, Roma Aurelia, Fiumicino Aeroporto, Roma Ostiense, Civitavecchia and Fiera di Roma stations. The aim was strengthening certain services such as maintenance, station cleaning and monitoring of passenger flows, with about 500 extra people employed.
The free Sala Blu service, which assists people with reduced mobility, was enhanced in all major stations to offer even more effective and timely support to passengers in need.
Lastly, also FS Security - FS Group company entirely dedicated to ensuring the security of trains, stations, employees and travellers - reinforced its presence with more than 100 resources in Rome's stations, day and night.
