A technical fault causes a fire to break out on a passenger train that departed from Olbia for Sassari and which is now stopped, having failed to exit the tunnel. Although the fire has been extinguished, the train cannot resume its journey and a passenger has taken ill due to the panic.
This was the scenario for the emergency exercise that took place yesterday in the Monti Enas tunnel on the Golfo Aranci-Macomer section of the line.
The first rescue teams of the FS Italiane Group, the Sassari Fire Brigade, Sardinian Regional Civil Defence, Olbia Railway Police, the Municipality of Monti and the Areus 118 medical aid teams were involved.
The exercise, developed by the Ferrovie dello Stato Group’s Annual Civil Defence Exercise Plan, was aimed at verifying the tunnel’s emergency and rescue plan and putting into practice the skills acquired by the Sassari Fire Brigade on use of the two-wheel vehicle made available by RFI for operations along the railway network.
The drills are part of the periodically-planned initiatives to monitor the effectiveness of the communication flows and the coordination chain, as well as the readiness of the territorial structures to intervene, along with verifying the efficiency of the safety equipment in the tunnel. This is all so as to improve safety standards and the protection of people, property and the environment.
There was no impact on train traffic.
