FS Engineering takes centre stage in India, with the opening of the Delhi–Meerut corridor

FS Group’s engineering company acting as General Consultant alongside the Spanish firm Ayes. An important step towards the development of a rapid transport system in northern India

Rome, 13 March 2026

With the new Delhi–Meerut line being inaugurated, the first section of the Rapid Rail Transit System-Namo Bharat corridor - one of the most strategic railway infrastructure projects in northern India - is completed.

This milestone is particularly significant for FS Engineering - FS Italiane Group’s engineering company - in partnership with the Spanish firm Ayesa as General Consultant for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor, India’s first regional rapid transport system for high-speed inter-city travel. The Company supported every stage of the project’s development, by providing world-class engineering expertise and its extensive experience in the construction of complex, high-capacity rail systems. For FS Engineering, the corridor’s opening marks a strategic milestone and confirms FS Group's valuable technical contribution to major international infrastructure programmes.

This new section now in operation represents a decisive step in the development of the rapid transit system in northern India, and a key element in transforming daily travel within the National Capital Region (NCR) and the state of Uttar Pradesh. The infrastructure, designed for train travel up to a speed of 180 km/h, will connect Delhi and Meerut in less than 60 minutes. One of the key features in this project is the use of the same infrastructure as for the Meerut–Modipuran section subway, with an operating speed of 120 km/h, making it the fastest subway in the country. The total value of the project is about EUR 2.7 billion.

The new Sarai Kale Khan station - which was also inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath - plays a strategic role in the Indian capital’s intermodal transport network by providing direct links to the Delhi Metro, Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and the ISBT Vir Haqiqat Rai bus terminal. The structure will also serve as a junction with the Delhi–Meerut, Delhi–Panipat–Karnal and Delhi–SNB–Alwar lines, currently under construction. Once completed, the public transport network in the Delhi metropolitan area will extend for approximately 750 kilometres.

FS Engineering is consolidating its presence in the Indian market, where it is involved in numerous strategic projects: from the design and management of the Rishikesh–Karanprayang railway line project - including the Himalayan Tunnel in the state of Uttarakhand - to general consultancy services for the Kanpur and Agra subway systems. The FS Group Company also participated in the construction of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 7, which opened in January 2023, and to the design and supervision of works on the Anji Khad railway bridge, an iconic structure that spans the river of the same name, linking Kashmir with the north-western regions of the country.

With its internationally recognised, highly specialised expertise and the use of advanced digital methodologies, FS Engineering remains one of the leading global players in railway engineering – covering both conventional and high-speed rail – and in the urban and road transport sector, contributing to the development of strategic infrastructure for the mobility of the future.
