FS, new HS/HC Napoli-Bari line: excavation of the Casalnuovo tunnel completed

On the Telese - Vitulano lot in the province of Benevento. Delivered the new overpass on Provincial Road 106 in the municipality of Ponte

Naples, 31 July 2025

Other important milestones for the new High Speed/High Capacity Napoli - Bari line. Excavation of the 330-metre long natural tunnel in the Telese - Vitulano lot was completed using traditional methods. With the lowering of the last diaphragm of the Ponte tunnel, which follows the drilling of the Reventa and Limata tunnels, approximately 80% of the excavation works for the natural tunnels included in the project has been completed.

In the same Telese - Vitulano lot, the new railway overpass on Provincial Road 106 (Ponte municipality) was handed over to the Province of Benevento and opened to traffic at the same time. The 170-metre long overpass, with 6 spans, each approximately 13-metre wide, eliminates the level crossing on the historic Caserta-Foggia line, and is preparatory to the completion of the new track-doubling works, in the area crossing the provincial road system.

Works on the Telese - Vitulano lot were entrusted by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, under Italferr’s Project Management (both companies belonging to FS Italiane Group) to the Telese Scarl Consortium formed by Ghella, Itinera, Salcef and Coget Impianti, with a total economic investment of approximately EUR 506 millions.

Overall, the future high-speed line between Naples and Bari will have a length of 145 km of new railway, with 15 new tunnels and 25 viaducts, and will serve 20 stations and stops along the route. The HS/HC Napoli - Bari route is an integral part of the European TEN-T Scandinavia - Mediterranean rail corridor and is also financed with NRRP funds.
