FS Group and Microsoft: agreement on Artificial Intelligence

  •   the partnership aims to accelerate the digital transformation of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane

Rome and San Francisco, 20 November 2025

FS Italiane and Microsoft have launched a strategic partnership to accelerate the digital transformation of the mobility operator from an AI perspective, inaugurating one of the most ambitious technological collaborations within the European transport sector. The agreement aims to provide over 50,000 employees with advanced productivity tools and to promote responsible innovation in business processes.

This partnership establishes FS Italiane as a leader in digitalisation and sustainability, in line with the Group's 2025-2029 Strategic Plan. Leveraging Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence solutions and the FS Group's industrial expertise, the collaboration lays the foundation for a new technology adoption model to modernise mobility and increase competitiveness.

"The collaboration with Microsoft represents a further step in the FS Group's transformation strategy," said Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of the FS Group. "Artificial intelligence allows us to innovate processes, enhance skills, and contribute to an increasingly people-centred mobility. It's also an opportunity to help our employees to develop by accompanying them on a path of professional and cultural development that puts knowledge and new technologies at the service of the country's development."

MICROSOFT 365 COPILOT AND AI TRAINING

Based on the agreement, the FS Group will make Microsoft 365 Copilot - Microsoft's AI-based productivity assistant, available to over 50,000 employees. The agreement also includes specific training and capacity-building programmes aimed at ensuring that AI becomes a concrete support for everyday work and a catalyst for cultural evolution.

Concrete benefits are expected from this initiative:

       Operational efficiency: streamlining business processes and reducing time spent on repetitive tasks. Valuing people as agents of change: AI-based tools will enable employees to focus on higher-value activities;

·       Strategic projects: more customised, efficient and responsive products and services for the railway ecosystem. The agreement builds on a long-standing collaboration between the FS Group and Microsoft, who have worked together on various innovation projects in recent years.

"We are proud to be partners with FS Group to accelerate their AI-powered transformation," said Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business. "By combining FS Group's profound industrial experience with Microsoft's cutting-edge AI technologies, we will help implement their vision of offering smarter, more sustainable, and personalized travel, setting a new standard for modern mobility in Italy."

PROMOTING INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

The partnership reflects the FS Group's commitment to digitisation and sustainability as key factors in industrial development. By integrating AI into rail and transport services, FS Italiane and Microsoft aim to optimise processes and simplify interactions between people and technology. Microsoft 365 Copilot will be the interface for FS Group employees to access AI agents that will help them provide innovative services, improving the quality of life for millions of users every day. The agents will help FS Group to have more effective control over its services, so that it can provide a better service to employees and customers by optimising the overall performance of the railway system.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Through this collaboration, FS Group and Microsoft are charting a course towards an increasingly innovative and people-centred mobility ecosystem. The partnership combines industrial vision and technological leadership to promote progress and efficiency with social responsibility, setting a new standard for the future of transport.
