Bologna, 22 May 2025
A passenger train from Bologna pulled off the tracks just before reaching the station where it was scheduled to stop. The derailment injured several passengers on board the convoy. The driver stopped the train and immediately alerted the Italian Rail Network operations room, which activated the internal Emergency Plan. Train circulation was immediately suspended on the section affected by the derailment and the intervention of the Railway Police and public emergency structures was requested, as provided for in the Protocol shared by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and the Emilia-Romagna Region 118 Service. The medical staff arrived at the railway line access point and, accompanied by train staff, reached the train and provided first aid to the injured persons, some of whom were taken to hospital by ambulance.
This was the scenario of the Civil Protection exercise that took place last night near the Galliera railway station, on the Bologna-Padua railway line, organised by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and FS Security (FS Group) with the participation of: Trenitalia Tper, Polfer Bologna Unit, 118 Emilia-Romagna, and the Civil Protection.
The common objective was to test the 'traveller rescue' scenario procedures. Particular attention was paid to verifying the effectiveness and speed of the communication flow and the coordination system between the entities involved, as well as to familiarising them with the railway infrastructure, particularly with regard to the access and intervention methods and timing for rescue purposes.
The drill is part of the FS Group's Civil Defence Service Drill Plan for the year 2025.
No repercussions on train circulation.
