Closing the railway ring in Rome

Closing the railway ring in Rome

This project envisages the closure of Rome’s northern railway ring in the Valle Aurelia-Tiburtina section and the construction of new beltways with the Tirrenica (Bivio Aurelia) and the slow line to Florence (Bivio Tor di Quinto).

Also included in the project is the construction of a new station at Tor di Quinto that will allow an interchange with the Rome-Viterbo railway line, the expansion of the Val d’Ala station, and the doubling of the Valle Aurelia-Vigna Clara section currently having a single track. The project shall enhance the commercial passenger offer in the Rome node and create a feeder route to the capital for freight traffic.

Gianpiero Strisciuglio was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for completion of the works.

Advantages

  • Create new interchange functions with the Val d’Ala stop, subject to future extension of the FL2 Rome-Avezzano-Sulmona services in relation to the completion of the Rome Tiburtina General Regulatory Plan.
  • Upgrade of connections for better integration of the network in both urban and railway areas, ensuring interchange with the rail services of the Rome-Viterbo line managed by ATAC at Tor di Quinto.
  • Possibility of activating a “ring” type underground service, to integrate the services already included in the Rome junction.
  • Allow direct access to rail services for some urban municipalities not currently served by this mode.
