Development of railway tourism through soft, slow and sustainable mobility and the rediscovery - on board the trains - of medium and small destinations around Italy.
Today, Trenitalia, Fondazione FS Italiane and nugo presented the tourists initiatives on the occasion of the second TopRail Forum organised at the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum by UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de fer), FS Italiane and Fondazione FS Italiane.
Over the next five years, world tourism will reach 2 billion travellers, many of whom will choose Italy for their journey. Already in 2018, incoming tourists from abroad grew by around 12%. In this context, FS Italiane will take on an increasingly central role, intercepting twenty million additional foreign travellers. Furthermore, it will redesign the multimodal offering, with the aim of enhancing accessibility to locations with a high tourist vocation.
The Trenitalia tourist offering is strengthened, both with regards to the domestic market and abroad. In fact, in 2018, Trenitalia increased the number of customers purchasing directly from the sales network abroad by 19%. 33% of the total number of people travelling aboard the Frecciarossa do so for leisure and tourism reasons. The long-distance Frecce and InterCity trains allow travellers to reach the most sought-after summer and winter destinations, along with Italy's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from north to south of the Peninsula.
Many historic sites, tourist attractions and cities such as Siena, Perugia and Matera can be visited availing of the FrecciaLink service. Indeed, the Trenitalia intermodal service offers around 20 connections each day, thus expanding the Frecce network with dedicated services provided with modern and comfortable buses. Digital channels are also being strengthened, with the trenitalia.com website ranked first amongst tourist websites in Italy (200 million visitors annually) and over 3 million downloads of the app.
The leisure vocation for regional trains is on the rise. In 2018, around 30% of travellers chose regional transport for leisure reasons, being an increase of 8% compared to 2017. In fact, tourists travelling on regional trains are able to reach parks, historic villages and other Italian beauties, such as those suggested by Trenitalia's Travel Books , which can be browsed on the trenitalia.com website. Trenitalia is also part of the Eurail/Interrail consortium which, for 40 years, has been promoting railway usage as a privileged means of transport to visit Italy and Europe. The Italy Pass is the most sold globally amongst the One Country products. Finally, the 2019 Tourism Oscar, recently awarded to Trenitalia for the third time in four years by the Italia Travel Awards, validates the FS Italiane Group's commitment to the tourism-related travel sector.
Fondazione FS Italiane
The historical itineraries of the Fondazione FS Italiane are also greatly appreciated by tourists. In fact, from 2014 to 2018, 275,000 Italian and foreign tourists chose the Fondazione FS Italiane's vintage trains, with a growth of over 200% throughout the period. In 2018 alone, over 76,000 people travelled on historic trains, discovering the most fascinating and evocative places around Italy. From north to south of the Peninsula, nine lines dedicated to sustainable tourism have been reopened to tourist operations in just three years, covering almost 600 kilometres of track. Another favourite tourist destination is the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum, one of the largest exhibition spaces in the world and amongst the most important railway culture centres in Europe.
From 2014 to 2018, the Museum has registered over 400,000 visitors from all over Italy and beyond, with an increase of around 800% in five years. Future projects of the Fondazione FS Italiane include the restoration of the Trieste Campo Marzio Railway Museum, the first in Italy within a former station, whose building site was inaugurated on Saturday, 4 May 2019. Together, Pietrarsa and Campo Marzio will constitute a museum system of excellence and one of international importance.
Digitisation has an increasingly important role in the choices of travellers and tourists who come to Italy, increasingly asking for connections and information. In this context, FS Italiane will extend the nugo services to include information and the purchase of services dedicated to tourism. Launched in June 2018 by the FS Italiane Group, nugo is the app promoting collective, integrated and sustainable transport.
As a means of transport, the train unites the Italian cities whilst nugo simplifies the interaction between people and the mobility services through new communication tools, integrating train use with local public transport. The technological platform (available for Android and iOS) allows you to plan and purchase all tickets for the chosen transport carriers for the trip in a single solution. nugo was developed with the aim of encouraging the use of shared transport over private vehicles, in a perspective of modal shift that promotes environmental sustainability.
