Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, together with FS International, has been selected by the Uruguayan Ministry of Transport (Ministerio de Transporte y Obras Publicas - MTOP) for the technical consultancy activity on the significant railway infrastructure project “Ferrocarril Central”.
In particular, FS International—through the use of the heterogeneous and complementary competences of the FS Group—will be called upon to carry out an evaluation and validation of the detailed design. The main objective is to confirm feasibility within the expected time and costs, reducing the risk of litigation (between the contracting consortium, the designer and the contractor) and favouring complete customer satisfaction. Execution of the contract shall commence in November.
Structured in the form of the Public-Private Partnership (DBOT - or, Design-Build-Operate-Transfer), the “Ferrocarril Central” project is aimed towards the reclamation and upgrading of the Montevideo-Paso de los Toros line (about 273 kilometres), mainly for freight use. Amongst others, the renewal of the tracks, the reduction of slopes, the supply of transit circuits and the construction of new alignment sections are planned.
