The project

Since July 2016, Italferr has been the Project Manager of the Design and Build contract signed by the Egyptian Railways with Siemens, which will carry out the installation and construction of the works.

The contract requires supervision of the construction of the command and control systems for the circulation, signalling, telecommunications, and distribution and power supply of the Benha-Zagaziq-Isamylia-Port Said railway line, approximately 218 km long. Also to be completed:

  • 20 technological buildings at stations for operators;
  • plant equipment;
  • an Operation Control Room at Zagaziq;
  • 19 small technological buildings along sections of the line.

The first phase of revision of the basic project provided by Siemens was completed and the architectural and technical specifications of the systems were then agreed upon. Now Italferr is dealing with the revision of the detailed project.

In September 2017, the construction of the technological buildings began in some locations on the line and work will last 24 months. By June 2018 the installation of signalling, telecommunications, and power supply systems will start in two stations.

All activities will be completed within the first half of 2021.

Expected benefits

The new plants will guarantee a reduction in the rate of railway accidents, which today is particularly high.

The capacity of the line will be increased from the current 90 trains/day to 200 trains/day.
