The World Congress on Railway Research, also known as WCRR 2016, is the most important global event on railway research. This eleventh edition, entitled Research and Innovation from Today Towards 2050, was organized by the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane in collaboration with Trenitalia and will take place at the Centro Congressi Stella Polare di Fiera Milano (North Star Congress Centre - Milan Trade Fair) from 29 May to 02 June 2016.

During the conference, some of the major national and international railway transport undertakings and infrastructure managers, scientific research institutes, universities and industries will be able to promote and exhibit their most innovative projects regarding developments in this sector.

The primary goal is to promote the WCRR railway research and the innovation and technological developments, while fostering worldwide co-operation and sharing the wealth of knowledge gained in the various branches of the industry (rolling stock, infrastructures, technology, logistics, environmental sustainability, and the commercial aspects of the transport service).

There were 936 scientific abstracts presented at this eleventh edition concerning projects and the results of research programs and process innovations developed in the railway sector by companies, infrastructure managers, universities and companies from around the world, with a significant increase compared to the most successful edition of the congress organized by the French Railways in Lille, in 2011.

Researchers and experts will come from all over the world to participate in the presentation of results from over 38 different countries, among those being the number of proposals submitted by Italy, Japan, France, China and United Kingdom.

In addition to the Congress sessions, technical visits to the Gruppo FS plants of excellence and of the railway companies have been scheduled.

Railway Talent

Among the WCRR participants, it is hoped that such an event will become a "Railway Talent Ambassador", i.e. professionals, academics and "enthusiasts" of the railway sector, of all ages, keen to promote to a variety of audiences the railway career field, the research aspect, and the education and training.
