A New Regional Train
Further to a public tender, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Alstom signed a contract to the overall amount of around 450 million euros to manufacture 70 single level electric regional trains with an option for 20 more trains and maintenance of the fleet for 5, 10 or 20 years in 2012.
Designed and manufactured at the centres of excellence in Savigliano (CM), Sesto San Giovanni (MI) and Bologna, Italy, these trains possess the experience and technology of Alstom in the regional train industry.
Manufacturing required a team of over 350 people and use of 85 tons of steel, 1070 kilograms of paint and 340 square metres of graffiti-proof film for the livery.
At a Forum dedicated to Local Public Transport held on 27 March, the new train’s name chosen by passengers in an online survey carried out by Trenitalia was revealed: Jazz is the name of this new commuter train.
Features of the new train
Created to fulfil modern day needs for mobility, this new train is the evolved version of an existing model, thereby guaranteeing its reliability and rapid certification, which should take place by the end of November 2013. Designed according to new standards in terms of comfort, safety and accessibility, this train can run at a maximum speed of 160 km an hour.
There are various configurations available for this train, which are quick to implement according to relative needs:
- as a Regional train, with 5 carriages and more seats
- as an Airport train, with 5 carriages with more luggage space
- as a Metropolitan train, with 4 or 5 carriages with more standing room.
Comfort and accessibility: “street-level” entry to carriages makes it easier for passengers to board trains, while retractable platforms installed on each door ensure easy access for disabled passengers. These trains generate lower noise levels thanks to aero-acoustic modelling techniques.
Interiors: each train will have a luggage storage area. Numerous services are offered on board: video-surveillance, internal luminous screens visible from every part of the train providing information, a sound system, notices in braille, 220V electricity sockets for mobile phones and laptops.
Safety and respect for the environment: each train has a video-surveillance system and articulation ensures the best-possible safety for passengers.
Motorisation is spread throughout the train, thereby optimising breaking and acceleration and ensuring lower energy consumption and relative CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
